Seminar D: HOST: Promoting Healthy Eating and Active Out-of-School Time

This seminar is a primer in understanding the current child and youth wellness crisis and developing the necessary approaches to increase physical activity and healthy eating in your out-of-school time program. We will introduce you to the latest research-based tools and resources to effect change in your program and thereby help youth (and staff) shape better habits and practices for health and overall well-being.

This seminar is for program leaders and practitioners serving all ages in afterschool programs, summer camps, and community based settings and for those affiliated with organizations such as OST, schools, intermediaries or youth development programs.

In this hands-on, two-day, highly interactive seminar, you will:

  • Review the new national physical activity and healthy eating standards to see how they can be best utilized by your program. The standards are a comprehensive step-by-step guide for adapting practices.
  • Learn to use a brand new, easy-to-use, research-based self-assessment and planner for physical activity and healthy eating that is aligned with the national standards.
  • Learn the importance of implementing physical activity and gain confidence in implementing more physical activity programming through hands on learning (hint… you will be active!).
  • Engage in discussion of healthy eating options for snacks and meals and the challenges that come with changing food purchasing practices.
  • Learn how to engage staff, parents or other stakeholders to support a HOST approach that wraps good practices into every day planning.
  • Help understand the importance and gains that youth can make when they take an interest in and adopt choices that support their positive growth through good nutrition and regular exercise.

You will also take home with you multiple resources such as the A+ Health Promotion Toolkit, a copy of the new National Afterschool Association Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards in Out-of-School Time, a variety of activities to share with your program, and your own action plan for building new approaches for physical activity and healthy eating into your program.

Seminar E: Courage To Lead: A Retreat for Personal Renewal

Time: Session 3, July 27, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Wellesley College Club at Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts

All too often, in leadership roles and service professions, we find that who we are may or may not align with what we do, leading to a sense of frustration, or feeling depleted or overwhelmed. In this one-day retreat, individuals will have the opportunity to reflect upon the original calling to their work; recall the people and events that influenced the thread that runs through their lives; and examine who they are and how they want to be in their work as leaders in a changing and diverse out-of-school time landscape. Participants will come together in a safe and nurturing space for personal and professional renewal in their roles as leaders in programs, organizations and intermediaries.

Using selected readings, journaling and small group conversation, participants will be invited to reconnect with their “inner teacher” to reflect upon and renew their work as leaders.

This is not a leadership skills or technique workshop but rather a time to replenish your spirit and your “leadership well” in the company of colleagues who believe that making time for self-care is indeed an act of personal leadership in a profession that requires courage and resilience.

Timeframe and Setting: A one-day retreat on Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Wellesley College Club at Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. The College Club is located adjacent to Lake Waban on the Wellesley College campus. Come casually dressed to enjoy some outdoor time as part of the activity session.

Fee: The cost per person includes the retreat, continental breakfast, and lunch. Each participant will take home a journal. For those NOT coming by car to Wellesley, we will assist with connections from the local train station in Wellesley to the retreat location, approximately a one mile drive.

Trainers: The retreat will be led by Douglas Babkirk with assistance from Ellen Gannett, Director of NIOST. Douglas is a trainer with the Northeast Center for Courage & Renewal. The mission of the center is to create opportunities for individuals to reconnect and realign their core beliefs and values with their work in the world.

Registration for this retreat will be limited and a minimum of ten must be registered by June 1, 2012 to hold the event.

Seminar C: Using Data for Program Improvement and Reaching Positive Outcomes

Time: Session 2, July 25-26, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The purpose of this seminar is to help APAS users build confidence in understanding data, develop an improvement plan, build a team around program improvement and utilize the data to benefit the youth that attend their program.·

APAS helps program leaders work in a collaborative, intentional manner to strengthen their program(s) and promote youth outcomes. Attendees are encouraged to come in teams and will learn how to use data in an interactive, hands-on, two-day seminar, and will have questions answered, share experiences, and help build a plan of action for their program.

The audience for this seminar is Executive Directors, Site Administrators or others who have some experience in collecting data and engaging in self-assessment. Come to this seminar to:

  • Learn how to explore and interpret APAS data from the SAYO and APT tools, using either your data or our sample data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Learn how to confidently introduce data and APAS findings to staff and other stakeholders and build mutual comfort with using and interpreting data to improve your program.
  • Develop skills in coaching to support and encourage program improvement.
  • Deepen your understanding of the APAS tools to help you identify evaluation goals.

This seminar is for those using APAS tools (any SAYO or APT tool or combination of tools) or those wanting to expand their use of APAS. As a result of this training, you will be ready to engage your staff, families, your host or school community, funders or other partners in the process and value of using data for self-assessment and program improvement.

Seminar B: OST Systems-Building in a New Age of Education Reform

The out-of-school time field has been through much iteration over the past 20 years, changing to fit the needs of young people and their communities.· In just two short decades, Out-of-School Time (OST) has gone from fractured child care to sophisticated systems working in partnership with schools and communities to improve the academic, social and emotional competencies of young people.· In this seminar, we will explore the origins and the growth of the field in order to provide context for the next phase of OST systems-building.··

Join OST leaders and practitioners from around the country who are working to build systems in their own communities. In this two-day seminar, the majority of the time will be spent in hands on activities, discussions, and action planning to:

  • Define systems-building and discuss lessons from the pioneers of the OST systems-building field
  • Look at current trends and forces such as expanded learning that are having a profound impact on the future direction of OST
  • Identify effective strategies for building a comprehensive system for out-of-school time in your own community·

The workshop will touch on such topics as building effective partnerships with schools and communities to operate more efficiently and effectively; forming local and state coalitions focused on policy and advocacy; quality improvement and professional development systems; and sustainability. Participants will come away from the workshop with concrete steps to take in their own settings.·

Facilitators Ellen Gannett, Executive Director of NIOST and Elizabeth Devaney, consultant and former Deputy Director of the Providence After School Alliance, bring a wealth of experience both nationally and at the local level to inform the topics in this highly interactive seminar.·

This seminar is ideally suited for teams from intermediaries, school districts, state networks, and funding agencies to come together to continue work they have started on building ·city, county, or state level OST systems.

Seminar A: Afterschool Program Assessment System (APAS)
