Funded by the Robert Bowne Foundation, this project consists of four components:
(1)the Practioner Fellowship Program which provides an opportunity for staff to develop their writing and research skills
(2) the Afterschool Matters Journal publication to disseminate thefindings and experiences of the Practitioner Fellows and ResearchGrantees and other researchers in the out-of-school time field
(3) the Edmund A. Stanley, Jr. Research Grantee Program to foster highquality cutting-edge research that has lasting impact on the field; and
(4) the Research Roundtables as a forum for connecting research and practice.


In March of 2008, NIOST was awarded funding in the amount of $2.12million to move the Afterschool Matters Initiative to the WellesleyCenters for Women. As part of this initiative, NIOST will be working tonationally expand the Afterschool Practitioner Fellowship, as well asdisseminate the Afterschool Matters Journal and Occasional Paper Seriesand continue both the Edmund A. Stanley, Jr. Research Grantee programand the Research Roundtables forum. This initiative has a goal offostering high quality, cutting-edge research, bridging research andpractice, and showcasing research that impacts the afterschool field.
