Career Pathways II: Expansion of T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood®
to Support Youth Workers

With this project, the National Institute on Out-of-School Time is teaming up with the Next Generation Youth Work Coalition, the Child Care Services Association and the Forum for Youth Investment to build on Phase I of the Career Pathways Project by supporting three states to pilot a strategy that has emerged as particularly promising – expanding the success of T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® to reach staff that work with school age and older youth (middle and high school-age), in self-regulated or state regulated programs (e.g. community-based organizations, affiliates of national youth-serving organizations). The overarching goal of the Career Pathways II Project is to ensure that the three states – Florida, Missouri and Pennsylvania – build upon current successes to increase the education, compensation and retention of the youth work workforce by expanding the T.E.A.C.H. model. The pilot will include developing scholarship models which address the specific needs of this workforce and link these powerful entities within states to ensure sustainability. The proposed Career Pathways II project will generate real-time state policy models and examples that can increase the supports, compensation and competencies of youth workers. Keeping the project strongly connected to the Next Generation Coalition will ensure these lessons are shared broadly within the field and in particular, with other states and localities focused on strengthening the youth work field. to ensure project coordination, regular communication, and overall action across the Career Pathways sites. This work is being funded by Cornerstones for Kids.

Cross-Cities Network

This project connected high-level leaders from different cities and states to educate them on the dynamic landscape of after-school programs. in hopes of directing the influence, funding, and high expectations of these leaders towards a "critical mass" of associated initiatives across the country.

Next Generation Youth Work Coalition

The Next Generation Youth Work Coalition brings together individuals and organizations dedicated to developing a strong, diverse after-school and youth development workforce that is stable, prepared, supported and committed to the well-being and empowerment of children and youth. We believe that this entails progress in at least five key areas: standards and competencies; professional development and training resources; learning delivery systems; career ladders and compensation guidelines; and research and evaluation systems.
