Professional development is often cited as one of the key factors in attracting and retaining a quality workforce.  While substantial progress is being made in this arena, current efforts are fragmented and tend to be organization-specific. This seminar will address both a program and systems approach for tackling the challenges of the out-of-school time workforce.

We will explore:
  • The critical connection between staff knowledge and skills and program quality.
  • Career mobility, compensation strategies, credentialing tied to higher education,
  • Training systems driven by a common set of core competencies.

Each individual or group (we encourage you to bring your team) will develop an action plan for improving practice and addressing workforce challenges at a system and/or organization level

This workshop will prepare you to use APAS - a new, comprehensive evaluation system designed to help afterschool programs improve their program quality and reach their desired outcomes for children and youth. APAS is the only assessment system available that helps afterschool programs link quality and youth outcomes together in a comprehensive, flexible and integrated fashion.

APAS includes three measurement tools - the Survey of Afterschool Youth Outcomes (SAYO) S and T completed by staff and teachers, Assessment Afterschool Program Practices Tool (APT) and the SAYO Youth survey. The SAYO measures changes in intermediary youth outcomes linked with long-term healthy development and educational success. The APT is an assessment tools that helps programs examine important aspects of program quality linked to the SAYO outcomes.

Together, these user-friendly tools are designed to help afterschool programs improve program quality and focus on appropriate and realistic outcomes for youth. These tools address the accountability challenge that faces afterschool programs.

To read the APAS Brochure, click here.

What You Will Learn:

  • Which youth outcomes contribute to youths' healthy development and academic success.
  • How the SAYO can help you capture positive changes in youth in a way that is realistic and appropriate.
  • How the APT can help you assess aspects of program quality which are linked to your desired youth outcomes.
  • How to effectively and objectively observe your program in action.
  • Key steps, procedures and tips for customizing APAS tools to fit your unique program needs.

Participants who successfully complete this session will be granted a “User Agreement” and access to the SAYO and APT tools.
