A. Advancing School, Afterschool and Community Partnerships
Monday-Tuesday, July 14-15, 2008, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Who Should Attend:
School, Afterschool and Community-based professionals seeking common understanding and tools for forging partnerships.

Are strategic partnerships necessary for your organization? Whether your need arises from programming, sustainability or new trends such as expanded learning time, this seminar will help you reach out and build valuable relationships. Learn from and interact with specialists from schools, afterschool programs and community-based organizations seeking to promote a new way of forging partnerships. Learn how to create a shared vision with strategies and policies that will benefit youth.

You Will Learn:

Why schools, afterschool programs, and community partners need to work together.

To recognize that each “culture” offers unique attributes (families, schools, afterschool, communities).
To explore implications and opportunities of extended learning time and other models put forth in support of youth development.
How to partner, create a shared vision, and develop an action plan.

B. Quality Advisor Training
Monday-Tuesday, July 14-15, 2008, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Who Should Attend:
Current (or aspiring) Technical Advisors, Consultants, Supervisors and Practitioners (all with extensive work in the field)

This training will prepare you to provide technical assistance to afterschool programs working on quality improvement. You will learn the skills of observation, analysis, and problem-solving to assess and counsel programs using a variety of tools including ASQ (Assessing School Age Quality) and APT (Assessment of Afterschool Program Practices Tool).

You Will Learn To:

Assess a program based on its strengths and areas for growth, and how to create an improvement plan tailored to a particular program’s needs
Coach, mentor and advise afterschool staff in order to promote organizational change and strengthen an afterschool program
Apply program observation tools during a practice session at a local afterschool program
Guide a program on the path to national accreditation

 

C. Seminar for System Builders
Wednesday-Thursday, July 16-17, 2008, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Who Should Attend:
Quality Advisors or those who provide technical assistance, State & Municipal Officials, Intermediaries & Community Leaders

This workshop is designed specially for those who act as Quality Advisors, provide technical assistance or are part of a regional organization supporting afterschool. It will help those who focus on afterschool program infrastructure and quality improvement. This seminar is designed for those who want the opportunity to meet and learn from others while learning methods for taking programs to the next level.

You Will Learn To:

Clarify the role and outcomes of out-of-school time in support of best practices
Create a professional development system to increase recruitment and retainment of a skilled workforce
Build a coalition to advance the out-of-school time field through increased public awareness, advocacy, and resource development
Increase sustainability through efforts in data collection, financing and continuous program improvement

D. Afterschool Program Assessment System (APAS)
Wednesday-Thursday, July 16-17, 2008, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Who Should Attend:
Afterschool Directors, Supervisors, Curriculum & Education Coordinators, and 21st CCLC Personnel interested in utilizing the APAS system

Prerequisites:
Prior experience in evaluation, including: data collection, program and/or youth outcome assessment

This workshop will prepare you to use APAS - a new, comprehensive evaluation system designed to help afterschool programs improve their program quality and reach their desired outcomes for children and youth. APAS is the only assessment system available that helps aferschool programs link quality and youth outcomes together in a comprehensive, flexible and integrated fashion.

APAS includes two measurement tools - the Survey of Afterschool Youth Outcomes (SAYO) and the Assessing Afterschool Program Practices Tool (APT). The SAYO measures changes in intermediary youth outcomes linked with long-term healthy development and educational success. The APT is an assessment tools that helps programs examine important aspects of program quality linked to the SAYO outcomes.

Together, these user-friendly tools are designed to help afterschool programs improve program quality and focus on appropriate and realistic outcomes for youth. These tools address the accountability challenge that faces afterschool programs.

What You Will Learn:

Which youth outcomes contribute to youths' healthy development and academic success.
How the SAYO can help you capture positive changes in youth in a way that is realistic and appropriate.
How the APT can help you assess aspects of program quality which are linked to your desired youth outcomes.
How to effectively and objectively observe your program in action.
Key steps, procedures and tips for customizing APAS tools to fit your unique program needs.
Participants who successfully complete this session will be granted a “User Agreement” and access to the SAYO and APT tools.

Refund Policy
Requests for refunds must be made in writing. Refund requests postmarked before July 1, 2008 will be eligible for a full refund less a $75 administrative fee. No refunds can be made for requests postmarked after July 1, 2008.

Lodging Options
The John Hancock Conference Center in Boston, MA rate is $149/night plus tax for an air-conditioned room with private bath, cable TV and telephone with modem. The John Hancock rooms are small European style.
