soccer kidsHOST members are sharing ideas and insights on ways to have a healthy and active summer.
  • The Food Research and Action Center reminds us that Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation, a new report finding that "after three years of significant growth, national participation in the Summer Nutrition Programs plateaued last summer." The Alliance for a Healthier Generation also wrote about the report, noting that in July 2015, 15.8 children received summer nutrition on a typical weekday for every 100 low-income students who received lunch in the 2014-2015 school year. This means that fewer than one in six children who needed summer meals received them.
  • The Food Research and Action Center is also holding a conference call on Cities Operating and Supporting the Summer Nutrition Programs, Thursday, July 7 at 1 p.m. ET. to talk about the Cities Combating Hunger through Afterschool and Summer Meal Programs (CHAMPS), Let's Move! Cities, Towns and Counties and other city-led initiatives cities to expand access to summer meals in their communities.
  • Representatives from the Food Research and Action Center and the National Farm to School Network are quoted in Modern Wellness Guide'sarticle on "How Farm-to-School Summer Programs Feed Low-Income Families."
  • The United Way offers "4 Ways to Fight Summer Hunger in Your Neighborhood."
  • Because summer is a time for barbecues, the American Heart Association offers some tips to keep in mind for grilling "fat-sensibly."
