Tony Streit is a Senior Project Director at Education Development Center, and a recognized leader in the fields of youth development, alternative media, and community technology. He is the Director of EDC’s YouthLearn Initiative, which develops technology integrated curriculum and training materials for educators in a range of settings, both domestically and overseas. He also serves as Co-PI for the NSF-funded ITEST Learning Resource Center, is conducting evaluation research for Adobe Systems Incorporated for their signature grant program supporting youth media making, provides peer training and consultation through the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation’s Afterschool Academies, and is developing professional development materials under the USAID-supported dot-EDU Initiative for educators in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Streit is an experienced filmmaker, media artist, and instructor who has designed and led project-based learning activities with youth for over sixteen years. Prior to joining EDC, he was Co-Founder and Co-Director of Street-Level Youth Media in Chicago, an organization that he helped build into a nationally recognized youth development model integrating information technology access and the media arts. His work with youth has garnered numerous awards including two Emmy nominations and the inaugural Coming Up Taller Award from the Clinton Administration.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelors degree in Communications and Economics, Streit completed MFA graduate coursework in Documentary Film at Columbia College Chicago. For the last ten years, Streit has been an active member of Community Technology Centers Network (CTCNet), and currently serves on the Board of Directors.
Streit is also currently an advisor to WNET New York's ed online, The Community Network for Youth Development, the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, and the National Assembly of Health & Human Service Organizations’ Collaboration for Youth. Streit is a frequent speaker on youth development, community technology and media and has recently presented at the Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Center’s Summer Institute.
